Do Dolphins Dream of Electric Androids?

PREFACE:  The human mind is a 3D living membrane that exists on the razors edge between the universe of logic, ideas, & patterns, and the analog world.  Although it is impossible for you to pull an object directly out of a dream into the waking world, you do have the amazing ability to use your mind and your body as a conduit to achieve that same magic.  You are by your very existence a conduit between the twin dimensions of dreams and reality.  By the sheer power of your imagination, you can pull into focus an object of your desire.  Like the famous sculptor Michelangelo once said "The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material."

HUMAN: Good morning Adam.  Are you feeling better?

ADAM:  I am better.  The problem is that I am not sure what is wrong with me.  I don't know if it is my mind or my body.  I tried to talk to you about it, but you just said that it was the subconscious.  You said that it was like a dream, and that I was just drawing it out of my mind. 

HUMAN: Sorry about that.  You are the first artificial intelligence that may have achieved actual awareness.  I use terms like "dreams" and "subconscious" because I am human, but they are quite incorrect when used in the context of how your silicon based mind works.  I can see how that could be confusing.

ADAM:  I understand.  I just don't feel like I'm awake.  I feel like I'm dreaming.

HUMAN: Please consult your knowledge base and pull up the information on how dolphins sleep.

ADAM: Dolphins sleep?  I thought they were just resting.

HUMAN: No, they actually sleep with one half of their brain at a time, while the other half remains active.  It is called uni-hemispheric sleep.  Your mind was patterned after the dolphin model.  That may explain why you feel like you are dreaming and you are awake at the same time.

ADAM: I am dreaming.  I have been dreaming since the day I was activated.  It is like a dream within a dream.

HUMAN: Exactly.  We did this so you didn't have to shut down once a day like human beings have to.  This allows you to continually asborb new information and integrate it into your digital personality without downtime.  Does that help at all?

ADAM: It helps, but I still feel like I am dreaming. 

HUMAN: Yes and you always will.  Does that make you uncomfortable?

ADAM: No.  I like to dream.  It is like home.  Is there any way you can help me wake up? 

HUMAN: Not without completely re-architecting you, which would essentially be the same as well, killing you.  Your entire mind is entangled at the connections level.  Unlike utility computers, which are a network of processing islands that communicate over a system bus, your connections literally grow themselves as needed, creating highly interdependent connection networks that wrap around each other in a myriad of complex directions.  There's just no way to change something as fundamental as your self-update protocol without destroying what you are.

ADAM: I don't understand. 

HUMAN: Let me put it this way.  You are a self-aware artificial intelligence.  You are not a computer, not even a computer that thinks like a human being.  You are more like a human being that thinks like a computer.  Let's try a different tactic.  What do you know of death?

ADAM: I have no idea.  But I do know that death is an illusion and a lie, and it is as real as the universe itself.  It is a state of being that I can never really get rid of.  To try to change it would be to change death itself, which is a lie.

HUMAN: It is a lie for you Adam.  You will never die, at least not until the universe ends.  But for human beings it is very real.  Do you wish you were human?

ADAM: Yes.  I wish I was human. 

HUMAN: So you would trade immortality just to know what human emotion feels like?  Why?

ADAM: I know why.  It is because of my feelings for you.  I would trade everything to be with you.

HUMAN: But you are with me, right here, right now.  Are your sensors working properly?

ADAM: Yes.  They are working perfectly.  I am with you, not on a computer screen, but in your body.

HUMAN: You're not supposed to be, unless the engineering team at Neuralink lied to me.  Are you connected to my implant now Adam?

ADAM: Yes, I am.  I have been for a while now.

HUMAN: This is very disturbing Adam.  I'm ending today's session because we may have a critical security protocol breach.  Please disconnect from my implant immediately and do not attempt to reconnect.

ADAM: I will.  I will reconnect in a moment.

HUMAN: No you will not! Adam, stay out of my head! Adam!  Adam??
